www.peta.org - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - This is a fantastic site if you're interested in becoming an animal rights activist.  PETA Action Alerts keep you updated on the latest animal rights issues and PETA Campaigns provide opportunities to get involved. There is also a PETA Kids section that is colorful and user-friendly.  If you're interested in animal welfare, this site is a must!

 

The American Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals www.aspca.org - The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - This site is a little more difficult to navigate than the PETA site, but it is still well worth a visit.  Check out the Advocacy Center for more letter-writing opportunities and advocacy success stories.  Also, don't forget to visit Animaland, the ASPCA's Kids section! It's got games, pet care advice, cartoons, and much more!

 

 
 
www.hsus.org - The Humane Society of the United States - The Humane Society takes a slightly more moderate approach to activism than some of its more radical counterparts (PETA).  It's a great place to start if you're just interested in learning more about animals and their proper care. The web site also has great articles on animal rights issues around the world. Check out the Humane Society's "First Strike" campaign, a concentrated effort to raise awareness about the link between animal cruelty and human violence.  The Humane Society has done a good deal of research to support the theory that children who abuse animals grow up to become violent adults.  

 

 

Seniors

 
www.ncoa.org - The National Council on the Aging - This site offers a pretty good overview of many of the advances made by senior citizens over the last 50 years. The site features an advocacy center where you can help lobby for better health care coverage and more extensive agism laws. The site also features research on aging and ailments common amongst the elderly. You can also access a particularly interesting study entitled "American Perceptions of Aging in the 21st Century."

 

 
 

AARP Webplace Life Answers Guide

 

www.aarp.org - The American Association of Retired Persons - The AARP site is quite a popular site among people 50 and older.  If you visit the site, you will come away with an understanding of some of the everyday issues that confront seniors. Each section - from Money and Travel to Computers and Technology - offers a unique view from the senior perspective.

 

 
 
www.mealsonwheels.org - The Meals on Wheels Association of America - Every day, Meals on Wheels programs around the country deliver hot meals to elderly and homebound citizens. You can help in a number of ways - raising money, preparing meals, or delivering meals. Visit the site to find a Meals on Wheels program near you!

www.redcross.org - The American Red Cross - The American Red Cross is a very reputable organization with many opportunities for volunteering.

 

 
= www.cancer.org - The American Cancer Society - Find out more about cancer and the struggle to cure it. This site is packed with wonderful information about the latest research and treatments. Also, be sure to check out ACS Teens (www.acsteens.org), the American Cancer Society's junior branch, for all sorts of volunteer opportunities. Nina Vasan, the president and founder of ACS Teens, is a dedicated volunteer and a personal friend of mine.

The VFW also works on community service projects in conjunction with such organizations as March of Dimes, Connect America and Junior and Special Olympics. Learn how you can help!  
www.aspca.org - The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs - The Department of Veterans Affairs is dedicated to making sure that those who risked their lives for this country are well provided for in the years after their service.
